Some of Victoria’s most exciting 4WD tracks are in the Walhalla and Mountain Rivers Region, accessed through the former Thomson Dam construction village of Rawson. This region of steep, rugged mountains and major rivers, contains many shaly or slippery trails through fascinating historic sites and mining ruins dating from the gold rushes of the late 1900s. Being only 2~2 ½ hours from Melbourne, Rawson is well-situated for weekend or long-weekend camping trips. Self-guided tours of historic sites can be achieved using the ‘Aberfeldy Track’ back roads tour guide brochure and map.

Mountain-Top Experience operates in partnership with Mountain Rivers Tourist Park at Rawson as a base for our driver training courses, using the motel lounge area as our classroom. Practical exercises are mostly undertaken on nearby tracks in the vicinity of the Thomson River. Also each year Mountain Rivers Tourist Park hosts our Rawson Base Camp Weekend, featuring a variety of guided tag-along day tours.

Mountain Rivers Tourist Park is an ideal base for 4WD enthusiasts, clubs and groups wishing to explore this exciting part of Gippsland’s High Country. The Park offers the comfort of camping or accommodation facilities suitable for all budgets. A campground with up to 20 sites for tents, camper trailers and small caravans is serviced by an Amenities block including dining shelter, BBQ and laundry. There are also campfire and picnic facilities. More substantial accommodation, especially in the event of inclement weather, include bunkhouse, motel rooms, cabins and even spectacular spa chalets.
