Imagine trying to drive up a pile of loose rocks shaped like footballs! That’s pretty much what climbing the Sir Frederick Range in the Gibson Desert is like, it being one of the highlights of our recent outback extended tour led by Marcus. The gibber rocks are worn smooth by the wind and very unstable, requiring gentle accelerator use for powerful vehicles such as a V8 Landcruiser.
A similar situation was evident as the source of a problem for a VW Amarok which we were called to recover lately near Neerim South. The driver had used too much power climbing a rock ledge, bouncing and snapping a CV joint, after which the ‘smart’ diffs not-so-cleverly applied all power to the wheel with no drive! The rescue by Alan and Marcus necessitated two of our vehicles with locked diffs and suspension which kept wheels on the ground.
Christmas has crept up on us while I was busy doing things like shifting the old office building from our former bus yard in Morwell to our tourist accommodation site at Rawson. It was fascinating watching the low-loader manoeuvre the very tight access with independent rear wheel steering on the trailer as well as diff locks on the truck to maintain critical traction. Below is our schedule of dates for tours and training courses, with a reminder that we have gift vouchers available. Especially for a training course, these can be vital for getting young four wheel drivers started on the right track!
